“Etiquette is the fine tuning of education” ―
Nadine Daher
The other day I was
working late in the office, huh loads of work for one of my onshore client.
Being the manager it’s always my responsibility to deliver the work. However by
the time I was about to leave I found out that still many of my juniors were
there in the office. I just enquired about what they were doing? And guess what?
I was perplexed. Most of them were busy with their Facebook profiles. Some of
them were playing with their gizmos.
Here you are, since the day gadgets invaded our
workplace the ethics etiquette of work place have changed a lot. Today most of
us spend time with these gadgets irrespective of the fact what our duty should
be. One of the worst scenarios is the fact that just because of these gizmos
people are no longer serious about their work. Someone is typing on his computer
at the same time talking to someone else. And the biggest problem arises by
this scenario is less productivity. I never advocate that these new mediums are
bad but then there is an old adage that too much of anything is always bad. It’s
good to use these high end devices to get connected to your loved ones but then
you should never forget that the use of these gizmos at times offend your work
etiquette. What if just because these you are not able to meet your target and
have to spend extra hours at office.
Come to social media and here you are, may be you
are not active in your work but hey check out your Facebook profile and may be
you are Warren Buffet of your profile. Therefore it is important that we should
understand the use of these gadgets and social media and use them in a proper
manner.
Today 1 out of every 3 people working in the workplace spends more
time in using these mediums and doing less with their work.
According to Statisticbrain,
37% of the employees check their cell phones in every 30 minutes or less.
Around 32% of employees keep texting while working at office. Apart from using
cell phones for texting, 37% of the employees visit there social media profiles
while they are busy with office stuff.
Therefore it is very essential that we formulate a
policy in order to cut down the overuse of these gadgets at workplace and make
sure that the productivity of our work is no hampered. After all it’s the work
you do that is going to pay. Imagine if you have no money would you be able to
maintain this entire hip hop or better say techno gossip along with your
lifestyle, I don’t think so. Therefore the gravity of the situation is to
understand what is important to us and how are we going to use our resources.
Here are some set of rules every employee should follow
at workplace:
1. Always be on time
2. Keep your gadgets on vibrate mode
3. Talk politely
4. Don’t pollute the office furniture while taking meal
5. Respect your colleagues
6. Dress formally
7. Bring your manners, when it comes to business
meetings
At the end it totally depends on you whether you
want to establish your credibility or want to lose it in an instance. It’s your
duty to maintain the proper environment at workplace.
